Family-run business Crane Garden Buildings has been building strong relationships with its customers since its origins in Dersingham in 1974.
The business started when David Crane hand-crafted the first shed out of the back of the family’s DIY shop.
“When customers began asking for different sizes and designs, bespoke building became part of Crane’s story from the very start,” said Emily Holmes, head of marketing.
As demand grew, the business expanded beyond its original workshop and later relocated to the Sandringham Estate, where it was awarded a Royal Warrant of Appointment and completed several buildings for the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Over the years, Crane has also formed long-standing partnerships with respected organisations, including John Lewis, the National Trust and the RHS.
Now based at its headquarters in Narford, Crane designs, manufactures and installs a wide range of premium timber garden buildings, including sheds, summerhouses, studios, offices, greenhouses and garden rooms.
All buildings are handcrafted in Norfolk using responsibly sourced timber and installed by Crane’s own teams, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern precision to create garden spaces that are built to last and designed to be loved.
It’s the company’s “local craftspeople, in-house expertise and a genuine customer-led approach” that sets it apart from other businesses, said Emily.

With more than 50 years of experience, the business understands not just how garden buildings are made, but how they are used and lived in over time. A recent survey of Crane customers showed that 83pc use their garden building every week, all year round.
All buildings are designed, manufactured and installed by Crane’s own teams, allowing close control over quality and ensuring a consistent experience from first enquiry through to installation and beyond.
The buildings are practical, long-lasting spaces that feel at home in customers’ gardens and daily lives.
Crane’s approach to its customers was recognised when it was given the Customer Excellence Award, sponsored by Greater Anglia, at the EDP Business Awards 2025.
Emily said it was “a hugely proud moment” for everyone at the business.
“It felt like recognition not just of the finished buildings, but of the care and attention that go into every stage of the customer journey, much of it behind the scenes,” she added.
“For a family-run Norfolk business, the award carried real meaning.
“It reflected the dedication of people across the company, from the workshop team to those supporting customers long after installation and was celebrated as a true team achievement.”

Emily said the award has had a very positive impact internally, reinforcing pride and confidence across the business and reminding teams that their commitment to customers is genuinely valued.
“Externally, the recognition provides added reassurance for customers making a significant investment,” she added.
“Being recognised for customer excellence by a respected regional awards programme strengthens trust and credibility, helping customers feel confident they are choosing a business that puts service at the heart of what it does.”
Looking ahead, Crane’s ambition is to continue growing in a way that is sustainable and true to its values.
“The focus is on long-term quality rather than rapid expansion, ensuring craftsmanship, service and care remain central to the business,” said Emily.

The company will continue investing in its people, manufacturing capability and product ranges, responding to the increasing demand for garden buildings that can be used year-round for work, leisure and family life.
Crane started 2026 with its biggest sale of the year and, going forward, will focus on strengthening its relationship with customers and local communities.
“The business is finding new ways to involve customers more closely, celebrating how people personalise and use their buildings and recognising that customer feedback and recommendations are central to its success,” said Emily.
“Customer excellence at Crane doesn’t end at installation. It’s built through ongoing relationships, trust and care long after a building is in place.”
