We started with a heavy shovel and six yards of earth to carve this kidney-shaped basin. The goal was always the central planted island, requiring careful dry-stacking of grey sandstone for the retaining wall. Watching the sun hit the surface and illuminate the schooling orange Koi validates every sore muscle. The water is a deep, clear teal, framed by smooth, dark coping stones and vibrant green lily pads.
