This one starts with future Eli stepping in, because the day didn’t go exactly to plan.
The fruit cage is finally ready, so this is the first proper planting on the plot. Blueberries have come up from the wee garden at home, and I’m planting both summer and autumn fruiting raspberries.
I talk through how the fruit cage beds are laid out, what the blueberries need, and what the raspberries don’t, and there’s also a realistic look at what it’s been like getting new ground ready with wind, rain, frozen soil, and docks that refuse to shift.
Part way through, I realised the raspberry situation is not what I thought it was, filming stops, and plans change. That’s just how it’s been up there lately.
The fruit is in, the fruit cage is finally doing what it’s meant to do, and things are starting to move forward. February planting is already on my mind, and there’s more to come, including a special tomato announcement.

Sometimes things just don’t go to plan, but a wee resetting the greenhouse and I’m over it 😂
I know what it's like when something goes wrong and you just have to step away for a bit because trying to fix it straight away is just not going to improve your mood.
I'm actually watching gardening videos rather than deal with the project that I've spent a month of weekends trying to finish, only to screw something up two days ago, but I persisted yesterday…only to discover just before I was ready to do the final fix that actually, I should have completely removed my previous work because otherwise trying to fix over it won't work. 🤦🏼♀️
Awesome allotment garden started. I can’t wait to see the produce you’ll harvest from the space. I’m excited that I worked out my onion germination problem. I have onions, now to keep them alive inside til May.😂. Watching you haul that soil reminded me that last year I built 3 new beds and hauled all the soil myself as my hubby had back surgery. I have a nasty spine arthritis and boy did I pay physically for a few months. This year I’m trying my hand at installing drip irrigation. I’m heading to your planning video next,; I tried last year but was too new and couldn’t wrap my head around succession planting. It’s an excellent video, well taught. Problem was mine❤. Here’s to better weather. It’s minus 35 and 4 feet of snow.
My sister keeps asking why i dont apply for a allotment, nah, i like being able to have a brew and break right outside my door 😂
It is slow going now but that big garden is going to be worth the slog in summer. Just FYI if you put the tip of one of your blackberry canes in soil, it will grow roots. Give you a blackberry to take to the big garden without disturbing the plants from the fence. Just a pot attached to the fence would work.
You cld line your raise beds at allotment first wuth cardboard Eli . Looking fab btw xx
I will trade you. We just got 18” of snow today and more on the way tomorrow!😊
I feel your pain with the digging. I got an allotment last year and I feel like all I've done for a year is dig, dig, dig, dig and dig out more weeds. It's now got to the point that we are putting in beds and it's time to look more like how I wanted it to, keep going. I know that you are a well seasoned gardener at this point, but I really enjoy watching your videos and just the little joys that it brings me, selfish but thank you xx
Do you have a fine netting cover over the "roof" of the fruit cage that I cant see in the video?
Yous have done so much, amazing!
At least Kate will have plenty of Raspberries ro enjoy😂. It makes me feel better to see that someone as experienced as you also makes mistakes. Really enjoyed this video 🥰
It’s looking really great. Are you going to mulch around the fruit bushes to stop erosion and keep the water in as your site seems quite exposed? Love your videos always upbeat and informative
Hi positive Eli, give negative Eli a big welsh cwtch (a hug but better) from me as a new Allotment holder in Wales. Its not a race, now is the beginning of a marathon.
Well done to you both. 2026 is going to be amazing.
Just wondered if you had thought about putting a thick layer of cardboard on the soil and then add your new soil on top… it does slow the weeds down
Cardboard & wire are the solution to underground varmint & weed control. Deeper beds will help – 12" minimum height!
Blueberries, blackberries & raspberries need acidic soil.
Progress was most definitely made. You're like me now – more raspberry plants than you know what to do with. A nice problem to have 😝
Hi, a small message from the Netherlands. So sorry for my english. I love your videos. I wonder will you plant your rasberries in a row now that you have 9 of them. I have them in a row sow I can use a rope to support them when they have a lot of fruit.
We are getting wind and rain here at the opposite end of the country. It is so much harder to get things done. It's not madness to talk to yourself anyway, sometimes it's the best conversation you will have all day😂
😂 it's not just you. I did exactly the same thing with the raspberries, ended up with three times the amount I needed. Luckily my local garden centre took back the ones I did not need and gave me a refund after having a good laugh at my expense. Must be a UK wide thing since I'm in rainy Somerset.
Well done with the progress of the plot Eli despite the weather. We seem to have had so much rain and wind! My autumn planted onions don't look too happy, some were up out of the soil when I checked and look like they could be rotting. Just as well I've got onion seedlings coming up. I've got Autumn Bliss and always get a massive crop. Can't wait to see more progress.
What is your favorite tea?
You and me both – Sick of the dark, wet, windy, miserable weather 😭
Had to have a little chuckle about the no of raspberry canes I bet there's not many of us who haven't done something similar in our lives ❤😊😊😊😂
Don’t blame you for hiding out in the greenhouse. The weather is miserable round here at the moment.
Roll on Spring! 🌞
❤I planted my blueberries closer together (3’ apart) and got my first bowl full last summer from 3 bushes. I love that you’re planting because I’m sitting here as it snows again on top of the 2’ already covering everything so that I can’t even get into the greenhouse for seed starting trays.
