A built in fireplace probably would have to face the main living area bc it is in the corner facing the end of the room a wood burning fireplace would look nice with maybe some lake rocks that you can find near your property !

The weight of the stone might be a factor, veneer makes sense if that’s a concern

If you have a stove, you also have a back up to heat water and cook food on top of it (if you get the right model) in case of power outage, which is likely in high snowfall areas.

Wood stove all the way!! Inserts get dated to fast for me. Plus if power goes out you can still cook on it!!
A free-standing wood stove would be a lot easier to cook on in an emergency situation. If you have a gas oven, maybe that's less of a concern, but it is something to consider.
Make sure the posts on the lower-level line up with whatever you put in next to the slider for the deck so the load will be carried all the way to the ground.

I am looking forward to seeing the cabin in the spring and other seasons. I just watched the first cabin video then YouTube started this one. You two work great together and I am glad you found a good pizza place nearby. 😊
Free Standing, for sure. I live in Colorado in an off-grid cabin (except for electric) and the fireplace we had kept the whole cabin warm, I think the radiant heat from the metal warms the space really well. Also you can put a cast iron kettle on top for added humidity.
Fireplace like the one you remove is the worst heat source plus more chances of chimney fires. Free standing stove is the best for overall heating of the cabin.

All these comments saying wood stove aren’t it!! If you’re going to use this cottage as a 4 season you need a full fireplace, Sabrina think of the fall decor and Christmas decorations on the mantle!! You can’t decorate a wood stove like you can a fireplace and it becomes such a beautiful focal point in the room
I love the free standing stove best. Usually you can get one with a fan that would push the heat out into the room. You can also keep water on it to put moisture into the air. We had a pellet stove in our cabin up in the mountains in Wyoming as we just found that easiest. It heated our whole cabin!
