Gardeners are being encouraged to support birds all year round, not just during the Big Garden Birdwatch.

British Garden Centres is urging the public to turn short-term birdwatching into long-term care for garden birds by creating bird-friendly habitats and maintaining regular feeding routines.

The call follows the RSPB’s annual event, which took place from January 23 to 25.

Julian Palphramand, head of plants at British Garden Centres, said: “Your Birdwatch results are the perfect starting point.

“If you had very few visitors at all, that’s your garden telling you it needs more habitat.

“Use this weekend as your baseline, then make small changes and compare your results next January to see the difference.

“Feeders and seed mixes are vital but adding plants that provide natural food and shelter creates a truly thriving, year-round haven for birds, and British Garden Centres has everything you need to turn your garden into a haven for wildlife.”

He recommends leaving seed heads on perennials through winter to offer food, and building log piles to support insects that birds can feed on.

Creating a wildlife-friendly lawn by letting grass grow or sowing wildflower mixes can also attract birds by providing shelter and boosting insect populations.

British Garden Centres operates 74 sites across the UK.
