It’s time to dust off your seed starting trays and take a tally of your seed stash because early January is the perfect time to get your slow to germinate peppers and herbs going along with some cold weather flowers to be ready for spring!

In this video I touch on seed starting mixes, soil blocking pros and cons, my review of the Epic gardening seed starting trays and how I break down the task of starting seeds into smaller more digestible projects throughout the week!
This video is relevant for gardeners who have frost dates around Mid to late march but can be used as a guideline for most southern United States dwelling growers.

I'm new to Texas, any suggestions on tomatoes to grow in the summer that are heat tolerant and pest resistant? ( I checked your videos and didn't see any specifically for tomatoes, if I missed it, feel free to point me to it)
Great video! The ratchet straps might be a game changer for me! Years of cursing at zip ties. 😂
Hell yeah, I got some peppers and a few tomatoes started a couple weeks ago. And a few sunflowers too just for the hell of it.
Which tomatoes have your had luck with the heat/sun we have in Texas? Also, those mushroom basket tomatoes…where did u get those? They're not coming up on amazon.
Relatively new Texan likely just dozen miles E of you, same zone edge. I am used to gardening in more Northern conditions. Not about planting but effect I observed later in the season, can I do something about it? – I grow mostly non-hot roasting peppers Cubanella, Marconi,… In TX I typically start them mid-January. Plants prosper, no problems, plentiful harvest… 'till late August – early September. Then, as if some switch is turned despite plants being healthy, flowering and fruiting…. fruits start being just 1/4 the standard size or even smaller. Last year I introduced some Greek peppers, evolved for very similar climate and they did the same… Other plants don't do so, I have tomatoes 'till December and cucumbers and zucchini as long as I am willing to keep them… So, any ideas what is happening? As I mention, same microclimate as yours, 8B/9A edge. Watering, feeding,… remain the same and if anything the heat at that point steps a bit back…
Hi there! I live in the same area that you do. Not sure why I didn't think of it, but I have some stainless-steel shelving in another room that I can actually use for germination. I normally do my germination on the kitchen table, but I really didn't want to do that this year. So, thank you for the reminder that I actually have shelving to use!
Love those stainless steel trays! I've been wanting to swap all my plastic as I use the soil blockers until I need to pot up. I wish they made smaller lengths ):
Dang, the HEBs around here (central, near Sunshine Gardens) don't carry Happy Frog. The one up by Ikea does, though, and it's a great price. Road trip!
I've had good luck with Cream Sausage tomatoes here in Austin; both production and taste are excellent, either sauce or fresh.
I’m in Georgetown so you are close by! This is great information and this is the year where I start my garden! Will have to watch your videos and hopefully get more information since I am a new gardner.
The part about homegrown being so much better and going with what works – yes, yes, yes. So worth it.
This was very helpful. Thank you.
You will obey me >:^ O
Your videos are amazingly helpful to this beginning back yard gardener!
The seeding video I needed. Thank You.
I just received some exotic, ghost pepper seed and other exotic seeds for planting the spring!
Most definitely will start my seats inside to get a Headstart.
Side note- know moving can be a real pain, and I get why you want to stay put. I’m praying everything works out for you either way—but I won’t lie, I’d love to have you as a neighbor here in Plainview, Texas.😂🙏🏾
I’m tired of fight squash bugs and vine borrers. Decided to grow medicinal herbs in the place of squash pumpkins and watermelon.
I got epic fushia seed cells and their larger 4 cells.
I start seeds in a large plastic bin that stays outside on my porch most days and pull it inside at night. No hardening off necessary.
I have all the same herbs
Spider mites have lived all winter long on my catnip 😢 Not been able to harvest any.
Hi everyone! I have updated the description of this video to have a few resources/links to the products I mention in case you wanted to check them out! I typically drop Amazon links just for ease of sourcing but you can find some of these items on different websites. Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions, I'm here to help ❤
My attempt at seed starting was an epic fail last year. But I'm trying again! This was so helpful.
I just ordered those irrigation grids, I cant wait.
i feel that so much, we’re probably not renewing our lease either here in Houston so im weary to go all out this year😭
I started my seeds in a cold frame with heat mats last week. In Leander too. Trying San marzano this year.
Im in zone 8A in West TX it just started getting cold enough to freeze more consistently. Got seedlings started indoors crossing my fingers that I'll be able to get stuff planted out by mid march early april.
Hi, I'm Zanna! It is so good to find a YouTube content creator who lives in central Texas! I am north-west of Rockdale, and we're on 9a, so we aren't too far apart. Maybe a couple of hours. So I'm a new subscriber, and will be tuning in on the regular! Once again, great to find you!
I’m in Dallas, crushed up my Halloween pumpkins outside and already all three are sprouting strong, last year I learned that I can grow okra effortlessly so I’m expanding on that to share with more friends.
Heading to Austin. What nurseries should I check out? I’m looking for good strawberry plants and cheap annuals 🫶
Amen girl. I've been planning it out.
Please do a video about sudden influx of gophers and hungry sparrows and rats attacking our 2 and 3 inch seedlings esp broccoli. Budget friendly, please. I have some traps, of course, and we know about row covers and such. I would really like to know if those oval planter boxes are the last expensive resort (with bottoms $$$$$). Zone 8A 8B just like yours. Yes, we could hide the starts in a cover crop as you suggest, but we are in a drought and watering is monitored and restricted. Depends on whether you want it to look good or grow some food or try hydroponics. Liked your shade cloth video for this area.
Love your videos! Love that your near San Antonio. I'm 7826O. And love that we grow almost all the same stuff. How are you preparing this week for the cold?
Hello thank you as always! Quick question, I’m very interested in Saint John’s wort. I had some growing for two years. The greens looked incredibly healthy, spread a lot, and grew for two years…but it never went vertical and grew flowers. When I asked the seed company they said it is likely not enough hours of daylight. Do you successfully grow Saint John’s wort here?

Hello! I was just wondering if you have some advice on strawberries. When to transplant them, do you recommend just buying the plants or start seeds?
Thank you for all your info! Didn’t know about soil blockers I appreciate it! New follower
