Gardeners’ World star Monty Don was flooded with support as he announced one of his beloved dogs has died. He shared a picture of his dog Nellie on Instagram, penning: “Peggy died yesterday. She was an old lady – a few weeks short of her 16th birthday- and went as she had lived, gently and without fuss. She was eccentric, quirky, infinitely gentle and loving and will be missed terribly. She is now buried in the coppice alongside Nigel and Nell and the other dogs.”

Fans quickly rushed to share their condolences, as one person said: “RIP dear Peggy,” as another wrote: “So sorry to hear this. You would have given her a wonderful life.” A third chimed in: “I am sorry for your loss.” A fourth penned: “I am so sorry, Monty. Dogs are such a special part of our lives.” Monty also has golden retriever Ned, who is currently the main canine star of Gardeners’ World. He also has Patti, who is rarely shown on camera.

Monty is known for his love of dogs, with some of his previous pets appearing on Gardeners’ World alongside him. His dogs Nigel and Nellie were beloved stars of the hit BBC show before they died. Nigel died in 2020, with Monty telling fans: “I am very sorry to announce that Nigel has died. To the end he was happy, healthy and his usual calm, lovely self. But he was suddenly taken ill.”

Nellie then passed away in 2023, with the BBC star announcing on Instagram: “I remember her not with sadness but gratitude for the way she enriched my life”.

The BBC star wrote about his pets in a previous blog post, as he spoke about having dog-friendly gardens. He penned: “A page dedicated to dogs on his blog says: “I have lived with dogs all my life and so it is absolutely natural to me that wherever I am in the garden I should be accompanied by a dog or two. It is their garden as much as mine or any other members of the family.

“Something that I take for granted is that, by and large, they do absolutely no damage and respect the garden completely. They (rarely) dig holes or crash through the flower beds. They do treat the long paths as bowling alleys down which they career in chase of the ball that we are obliged to throw, but it is harmless enough.

“The coppice holds the graves, marked by headstones, of Beaufort, Red, Poppy and Barry, as well as the two cats Stimpy and Blue. They all enriched our lives immeasurably, and are now all a permanent part of the garden that they loved.”
