Planted this witch hazel last spring and had it caged temporarily. Seemed to avoid the wrath of the bunnies. Stupidly, I took the cage off recently and just walked out to this massacre. Thoughts on survival? Anything I can do to help it along?

Winter is always the worst time because bunnies have nothing else to eat besides bark.

The left branch may survive if you protect it. The right looks like a goner to me

Even if the top branches tie it will resprout from the roots in spring. They’re more like large shrubs by nature.

Doesn’t look completely girdled. Put the cage back on. My yard is Land Of A Thousand Bunnies and I keep adding more and more cages.
