I've planted tomatoes and peppers in the ground after the last frost date and they just sat there till the soil warmed up . The ones I planted what I thought were late took off.
I started winter sowing and planting herbs indoors under my grow light. I’m zone 6b so I start my peppers next month and tomatoes in March and so on . 😊
I order seeds extra early so i get the ones i actually want. But i can't even get in the ground till May.
I started cabbages. They need to go out early to avoid the cabbage moths that fly around all summer and fall.
Luke when do you start your artichoke seeds? And how do you “winter” the seedlings?
Dang there go my Wednesday night plans 😢😢😂
Starting my garden indoors has been my problem for the past 3 years
Celery is the only thing I started today. Zone 7a
I'm just across the state in Michigan 5b. I wait until about the last week in May because even if we don't get a late frost, the ground isn't warm enough for some things to germinate, like some sweet corn. I have been guilty of starting my seedlings too early and having tomato plants that I had to prop up with sticks and sweet potato starts that were taking over the growing space. I'll try to remember your metric, thanks.
I started sweds in February one year. Learned not to start most of plants til the end of March!!
The exponential growth from seed to plant always catches me off guard every year…
How long does fish emotion or worm casting last???
I started all my seeds 1 month sooner than I should have last year. This year I'm going to wait until the beginning of March to start.
I have about a month to a month and a half before I can start tomatoes and peppers. Praying my garden does well this year. Last two years haven't done to well because of the rabbits and ground hogs. Living in the city not my want but can't get out so doing what I can right now. Get out of debt and stay out. Pray. prepare, pray. God's blessing to you and yours
Well, if you want geraniums to get mature enough to bloom by Mother’s Day, you should have taken your stem cuttings by last week. I have a little aero garden with basil and tomato’s, but I will get them big enough to take stem cuttings from, and they will still be lucky to be big enough to get a second cutting from . Baccatums need started before the 2nd week of January for a max production by August, otherwise they will wait until September to ripen, the taller varieties need up potted 3 times before I put them in the ground, and they reach about 6 ft tall… 😉
Luke, great advice. I had to learn this the hard way too.
Who starts 200 tomatoes to begin with???
Who starts 60 tomato plants???
Made this mistake a few times. Usually my front room looks like jungle.
The days to maturity is so important.
Last year I just used the Garmer's Almanac guide tonseed starting. All my tomatoes were perfect… except for the ananas noir. I didn't realise that they needed an extra couple weeks for maturity.
I got only a few harvests before the frost hits, lol.
Learn from my mistakes
I am in Ohio. Learned my lesson last year starting peppers and tomatoes too early and doing too many seeds. Right now, I only have onion seeds, apple mint, spearmint, and Goji berry growing indoors. I am starting some winter sowing in milk jugs this month. Next month, I will add some herbs but will wait until March for my peppers and tomatoes. April for melons, cucumbers, and squash.
We’re in zone 4a. I started tomatoes last year in February and they didn’t do well at all. My peppers though I start in February and had the best crop. We can’t typically get things into the ground until Memorial Weekend and will still have to cover them for frost.
This happened to me last year in NW Ohio 😂 I think I started tomatoes in late February but we had such a chilly May that I had tomato seedling trays everywhere in my house. I was taking them outside during the day but having to bring them back in at night. Never again lol.
I just started my onions, peppers late February, tomatoes mid March. Wintersowing brassicas
I know I've definitely started early at least once or twice, or too late more often than not lol
i know i can start onions in Jan, celery in Feb, Peppers in Mar and Tomatoes in Apr. Waiting is the hardest part
Sorting my seeds today and making a list! You couldn’t have come out with this at a better time!
The exception is possibly hot peppers. They take about a month to germinate and another month to grow more than 5 inches. Then another 2 months before you get flowers. Then another month before the pepper get big. Then another 2 months before they ripe
that big foot joke was so unexpected and hilarious i hollered
My last frost date is Feb 14th. Still too early???
The whole "viable fruit" on the plant before you can place out in the garden is an easy fix if you trim the flowers off, it won't fruit without flowers and it'll focus on leaf growth. I don't germinate my cherry tomatoes until mid March, at least that's what I do in SoCals zone 10B
Does this rule apply with peppers too? Especially pertaining to Hot peppers grown in Michigan?
Why can’t you just figure on how many plants that you want and start them in bigger containers
The only thing I do early is my hot peppers and only the really hot like habaneros and up. I make sure I up pot to a larger container. It allows me to get a month more productivity out of the plants. Everything else is mid-March and in the ground in early May. I may put a few tomatoes in pots and leave them in containers to do an experiment. We shall see.
I always like to remind people that it has in fact snowed Mother’s Day weekend one year in Michigan. I want to say between 2016-2019. I only remember because I was at a music festival. Plants go outside with monitoring in May but I’m still VERY cautious. No early starting for me unless MIgardner recommended 😉
In Deep South Texas, mid January is a great time to start tomatoes. We get way too hot here. Sometimes 120 degrees here. So I prefer to start early and yes I do up pot. MI is just a different climate than here. My tomatoes go outside in early March. Last year it was 80 degrees in March.
Im in zone 8a and I've already got loads of mater and peppers and eggplants and dill and basil and loads of flowers
Oh thats ok with me. Im gonna grow mine and I share them with my family and friends. Im gonna get more shelves and grow lights and heat mats
I start my peppers end of march early April, and put in the ground by may 24 to June 1st checking that weather is safe. The plants don’t get stunted at all, lots of harvests as the plant grows until October usually. I never understood how people start this stuff in January lol
I did this two years ago, I followed someone’s guidelines and started my tomatoes too early. The stress was real, and it was MY STRESS, trying to find places to put all the tomatoes as I potted them up in bigger pots and ran out of places in my grow room. I had tomatoes moved in with my houseplants. It was insane. By the time I got them planted, a lot of them were two feet tall. 😮 I live in 7b and tomatoes grow great here, and I had planted so many varieties. This video made me laugh and also gave me PTSD
As another Michigan Gardner I needed this😂 was just thinking about how spring is so close
Because I'm not starting so many tomatoes and peppers, I start them in party cups, the 20/24 oz ones. That way I don't have to "up pot" at all. I'm so ready for spring and working in my garden and yard!! Thank you for all the wonderful tips. God bless and protect.
Thanks for the information, Luke
