Are you considering leaving a section of your estate to remain natural for the wildlife to rest and inhabit, and to show your children that wildlife deserves its own place also‽ Your "time block" sounds inspirational. Yard or garden work is so different than gardening being relaxing.
I actually started doing a few things every night this week, and have gotten a ton done. I was doing it getting ready for this arctic freeze, but excited about what i have gotten done in a little bit of time. Will definitely continue to do that.
I garden in Kent in England (my county is known as the garden of England) and I would say that I have learnt to let go of small things and accept that nature will win so don't get mad if your garden doesn't look perfect because it will never be, just make it nice, manageable and enjoyable for you, for your needs and for that specific time of your life. Be open to accept that those aspects might change as your life changes. Changes mean new different opportunities ❤ 😊
And you have a maid albeit part time you have help inside as well.
Another point I would make is to “Allow You/Your Garden To Change.”
As we are empty nesters now, I don’t need to grow as much produce as when the kids were home. I still like to grow enough to share, but I don’t need to grow 30 tomato plants as an example.
I’m also finding more joy in cut flowers rather than 100% vegetables. I like to make an arrangement for my office every week and I love cutting flowers to share so this year I am increasing the amount of flowers and decreasing produce.
Love it x ( u k )
I only plant flowers that I enjoy and only what I actually eat. I will try a new vegetable once in awhile but I'm not planting a bunch of peas if I rarely eat peas. Butterfly bushes are not something i enjoy so I no longer have those. I have also incorporated more seating areas in my gardens so I actually do take the time to relax and enjoy it.
For fall and spring clean out we do “cut, blow, mow”. Cut down or trim, blow ithe trimmings and leaves out of the beds into the yard, and then mow it up. Seems simple, but has made a huge time difference for us
When I was working, I walked around the garden every evening after dinner. It was not only a time to enjoy the garden, but I would have pruners in my hand and have a pail with me to pick up anything that I saw that needed tending to. Not big jobs, just little adjustments. The main goal was to enjoy my garden, but at the same time do a few tasks that enhanced its look and contained things from getting too far ahead of me and becoming a big job.
Your idea of zone gardening really helped me. The garden stays tidy and I’m not overwhelmed.
What are the lavender flowers behind you in the heartly…..
Hi thanks 🙏 🌲🌳🌷🌷🥀🍂🍁🪴✂️
All great advice! Each year I "treat" myself to a couple of specific annuals mail order because I have spent too many springs chasing all over the county looking for something close. Even our local nurseries struggle with growers not having what was ordered available when it comes to shipping day. My pet project is usually the planters that flank our doorway which are very important to me and I see multiple times a day. All of my other plants are negotiable!
what a great idea for a video – brilliant! thank you – so much good information. thank you!
Great video to reflect on. I had not kept up on my gardens last year. I was grateful my husband gets out there to pull weeds. So I did a big clean up this past fall and made a pact that I would clean a different section everyone day this year to keep it under control. I want to enjoy my flowers. I do pace myself. I take breaks. My favorite thing is to cut the grass. It's therapeutic ❤❤❤❤
I’m getting older so I make every trip up and down the stairs count.
I need to constantly learn to give myself a break got very overwhelmed last year with my oldest graduating and off to college. Trying to balance everything gets super overwhelming. I have started to plan how I’m going to tackle stuff this year between ideas from here and Erin’s (impatient gardener) recent video.
What happened to bethany
I almost never comment but I feel it necessary in this video. I retired 7 yrs ago in my late 60s and started watching YOU! about 5 yrs ago. I have been influenced to say the least. I do allot of what you do. You are a fantastic family as a whole and hats off to the garden center overtime I call to order. LOVE IT ALL Thank you for what you do.
Where is Bethany? I never see her in any of the latest videos. It seemed like she was always helping Paul with things. Know she was parttime, but I miss seeing her.
Tip #9 – I watch Garden Answer every single day to learn and get inspiration. Laura you are a gem ! ❤
Is Bethany doing something else these days?
It's nice to see how you function in your gardens and share with us. I can apply these tips for house cleaning too! Regarding stairs, I put items at the top of the stairs to take down to my basement or vice versa bringing items up! I need to view your pruners video to take care of my pruners! Last year I could only sharpen the blades and oil the pruners. I have lots of time being retired now, but the energy level is not what it used to be! So this would help myself by pacing myself. Purchasing seeds does get overwhelming and I don't have a greenhouse to put them in once sprouted! So I usually start my seed planting in February so by the end of April I can move them into a plastic unit outside to harden them and protect them from any late frost.💚
Such great ideas to de-stress our busy lives. You mentioned Melissa’s garden you installed. I don’t recall seeing the arbors, grapevine or picket fence install. Did I miss it? Do you think we could revisit her backyard?
The invasion of Japanese beetles in the Midwest has stolen my joy
What a great video! Efficiency and organization are my super powers, but I first heard about creating zones in my garden while watching Garden Answer. It changed how I gardened. I’m a Type A personality and would “one more thing” myself to the point of exhaustion. Then, I found I avoided going into the garden for fear I would do it all over again. I still find it hard to stop when I complete a zone, but I’m much better than I was before. Thank you so much!
All good advice!😊
Thank you Laura
Thanks Laura!
Great advice 🥹
Weeds! Weeds are a killer for me! My main burn out. We are a zone 9 and it’s just weed season 10 months out of the year here. Im gonna try setting a timer and seeing how far I get in that time 😂
