It’s the first day of January, and instead of staying indoors, I’m outside in my garden digging out raspberry plants. With a rare dry winter day, I decided to finally tackle a job I’ve been procrastinating for a long time.
In this video, I show the reality of removing established raspberry plants from a small kitchen garden, including how invasive the roots really are, how they grow in heavy clay soil, and why planting them in a tight space was a mistake. This was a tough, physical job and a real learning experience.
I also share a quick winter update on my garlic and onion seedlings growing in modules, plus my plans to move the raspberries and rhubarb to the allotment where they’ll have more space to spread.
🌱 If you’re gardening in the UK, working with clay soil, or wondering whether raspberries are right for a small garden, this video shows the honest side of it.

"F-ing raspberries" 😂. I know nothing about raspberries but I have a local tip, Chalcroft nurseries in bognor will have their seed potatoes in a few weeks, last year they had over 90 varieties, who knew there were so many 😲
The tool you described @11.50 sounds like an Auger, hope you manage to get enough out to stop them growing back, good luck 👍😊
Those raspberry roots are brutal 😄 This was a great reminder of how important spacing is especially in a small garden. Super helpful watch, thanks for sharing the real side of it!
Nice video. Please, please get rid of the awful music like when you were digging the raspberries up.
