Hi!
My name is Justin and I have my managed my family’s business (S&K Greenhouse) for the last 10 years! It is a local garden center in Shelby, NC that my family started around 25 years ago.

We have a strong desire to discuss and teach gardening to the online community and welcome anyone who wants to learn. Though we have been involved in the plant world for decades we have found that there is always something to learn when it comes to gardening.

Whether you are a master gardener or just starting out this channel is for you. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch our videos!

  1. ** Attention ** I made an error on the Taylor Juniper's appropriate zones. It's actually supposed to be zones 3-9 not 7-11. Sorry about that! 😅

  2. We drove over three hours to visit S&K and what a great investment of our time. Every plant, without exception, looked healthy, robust and thriving. The toughest part? Deciding on what to take home!

Justin was extremely helpful and everyone treated is like family. The vast inventory offered the best selection of plants I’ve seen in a nursery or greenhouse. Make the drive and you will not be disappointed’

  3. I decided to go with the Nellie R Stevens Hollie for a dense privacy hedge along my property line.

Anyone know how much space I should leave between NRS shrubs and little Gem Magnolia trees?

I would love to add 1 or 2 viburnum varieties into the visual mix but

  4. Besides eastern red cedars which are weeds here in central Oklahoma, I can testify that Arizona cypress does great here. And is gorgeous and smells wonderful.

  5. Very informative and fun video, thanks! I'm in Ottawa 🇨🇦 zone 5, winters bring tons of snow and freezing rain. Would the North Pole Arb stand up to these conditions?

  6. Great tutorial. Thank you! Could you advise if I can mix and match these or do I have to stick with the same type? Do they tolerate each other.

  7. Nice trees and sharing. Thank you. How is life in America? Is it really very bad economically and socially? Like ppl really turning bad?

  8. I love the Privet tree, you can thin it out so you can see it's branches and let it form a nice canopy, althught they say it's tremble, better to remove lower braches as needed and thin to let sun through gets about 14 ft, droubt tollerent only one establish until then makes sure it gets enough water but doesn't sit in wet soil. OK for AZ but I would avoid west facing heat of the day sun and wrap trunk for the summer. Revove stakes after one year, make sure trunk flare is planted above ground at grade level and water roots not trunk. A Clean, clean tree make sure soil in not to acid (high PH) and soil drains so not standing in water, gypsum helps drainage. B1 if you see leaves curling means it under stress and will drop leaves; yellow is lack of iron due to high ph or to much water. Yell leaves can also mean not enough nitrogen which gives it's green color so a good fertilizer once a year to replenish nutrients to feed the trees top off with mulch helps control weeds and keep soil moist longe,r will go a long ways. Hummingbirds flock to the flowers on this tree a few bees too but this tree does not develo beans just drops a kittle black seed is said to be toxic to pets, but they would have to eat a boat load of them. It's also an evergreen so it's green all year round and flowers in the spring.

  9. Does anyone knows if those cypress that get 8’ wide can be kept trimmed down a bit thinner to give it more of a wall shape? Like maybe 6’ wide?

  10. by the time these grow to give me some privacy my nosy neighbors will be long dead and buried.

  11. Hello, we planted over 40 green giants. We are needing more to use to double them up. Was wondering how much you charge for the green giants and I also wanted to know if you need to prune the green giants. We never have, didn't think we needed to, but just seen a video and wasn't sure.

  12. Can Green Giants be pruned and kept at 15 feet? Or will they not tolerate that? I was leaning toward American Pillars, but someone said they won't tolerate dense clay soil. Are the Green Giants the only Arborvitae that will do that?

  13. Hello, it’s June 3rd….I don’t have a green thumb but after watching your videos I want to become a plant person. My question is, is it too late to plant a Giant Green Arborvitae? Zone 7a, Missouri next to Arkansas.

  14. Hello Justin. Thank you for your video. It is very educational. I'm living in Malaysia and I wish to grow Italian Cypress aka "Cupressus Senpervirens Stricta". However I'm not if it will grow well in my country. We have tropical climate with heavy rain and lots of sun. Humidity is high. We could be in Zone 13.

What type of tree would you recommend if I'm trying to achieve the same dense look of an Italian Cypress that is planted on the road shoulder about 6ft apart from each tree with height of up to 30ft?

    Thank you Justin.

    BR,
    Simon

  15. I love the Taylor Juniper I want some Italian Cyprus but I’m in zone nine a in North Central Florida not sure if they would work

  16. Just a warning to those watching this video that this is a good video for natrowing down a possible plants for privacy but make sure tobdo more research in addition. For example, ligustrum recurvifolium blooms are toxic to dogs which wasnt mentioned in the video. Also i hear the blooms attract bees and potentially flies.

  17. Plant the Planet! great video! [ in a very good way, your manner of presenting reminds me of "Mike Timmons" from Recreational Resort cottages youtube channel, very articulate and presenting the finer points (he's in texas though)

  18. Love your enthusiasm and knowledge; I'd trust your advice because you seem to know what you're talking about. I like several of the trees; I'd probably mix & match (darker with lighter) for a stunning lineup!

  19. I used wax leaf photenia, I'm in northern California and they are now about 15-20 feet high, I have a guy come in and trim them once a year. On the other side of the yard ( large yard). I have oleanders
