On today’s 2 minute garden tip, I share the secret to growing perfect broccoli! Growing broccoli can be challenging, because it is temperature sensitive. Too cold and it burns, too hot and it bolts; if you don’t get perfect weather, broccoli harvests suffer. There is a simple solution: plant covers. By using frost protection in cold and sun protection in warmth, you can give your broccoli plants perfect conditions when weather doesn’t agree. See the results for yourself!

  1. My problem here in North Texas is a temperatures go up to mid 80s then plumb back down to the mid 30s

When the temperature is near 80 something degrees, my broccoli leaves just Wilt. I’m so afraid all this hard work is gonna make my broccoli bolt.

  2. Gorgeous broccoli. I just put out a second batch of seedlings, hoping to get them done before the spring heat kicks in here.

  3. For any folks in Europe watching this, 1.5oz/yd is the equivalent to 50gsm. My fleece is 30gsm so I'd have to double it over. I appreciate you explaining why the ends are kept open. What % shade cloth would you suggest for spring grown broccoli?

  4. Love you vids and please dive into varieties of broccoli that you find perform the best too! Your deep dives into what you grow are my faves!

  5. Two 18 F nights and still good! That’s crazy! You’re telling me I can do this!!! Now, I just need to figure out how to get those starts growing in the end of summer.

  6. Beautiful Broccoli! I have accomplished that in the spring only once here in N.Y zone 6a. I'm trying to do it again this year. My broccoli is already growing under grow lights to be put out very early spring with protection. Our spring goes right into summer usually and it bolts. So starting early is key.

  7. I’ve tried 3 times and I’m not far from you and it failed each time. Just had one today that was going to flower. Wasn’t even big at all.

  8. It looks gorgeous and ready to cut right now. What do you do, freeze it? It's so hard when you live alone to use a lot of produce all at once in your garden like that broccoli, I would only use one of those heads every, probably 3 weeks.

  9. Those are beautiful. Do you blanch the florets and freeze them? It looks like you have a lot there, all ready to cut at the same time.

  10. (Gasp!) That was NOT a 2-minute garden tip! It was nearly a 5-minute garden tip! For shame, good sir!

But also, for those of us who DO live in the PNW – any advice on broccoli? Tried to grow it last year, but every new leaf was eaten by…something. Despite that, the stalk is still standing tall as of January.

  11. I love broccoli but keep forgetting to grow them. It's too late this year since i only sow all my seeds. Will try it this oct or nov…

  12. They are so beautiful. All my broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower are eaten by the rat. There are about 30 plant. Do you have any idea how to stop it? Thanks so much.

  13. Good God, shade cloth and agricultural fabric have been lifesavers for me for finicky, cool-weather crops. I used to refuse to grow things like brassicas, snap peas, etc. because the weather here in 8a southeast VA is so variable. We'll see a random night in the mid-30s in April and a series of days 80+ in October, for example. Knowing I have some control over my growing conditions imbued me with the confidence to try some of these crops with success. I've yet to try broccoli, but I really want to….that, and yellow, "cheddar" cauliflower.

    Another awesome vid!

  14. What I want to know how to keep the cabbage white butterflies 🦋 off them!!! I've tried spraying natural spray, tried nets…help!

  15. I suspect I will never have any luck with broccoli here in Ft Lauderdale – mid Jan and we broke the record high yesterday,a repeating event

  16. Two nights of 13-15 degrees F. didn't touch my broccoli plants or their florets due to a frost blanket topped off with a layer of leaves. Good advice here as usual. Thanks Anthony!

  17. I've also learned that broccoli doesn't do well in highly fungal soil, so near old happy fruit trees or where mushrooms tend to pop up may not work out for broccoli, at least it hasn't for me.

  18. I planted broccoli once and it's d best tasting! I am trying again this year. those broccoli are so good and ready 😊❤
