Cheyenne, Wyo. – The Cheyenne Botanic Gardens has said so long to the palm.

Early this week, the Cheyenne Urban Forestry Division completed the removal of a Mexican fan palm from inside the Shane Smith Grand Conservatory.

In a social media post, the Gardens said the removal was necessary to prevent potential damage to the conservatory’s ceiling as the palm continued to grow beyond the space’s vertical limits.

“The decision was difficult but ultimately was made to minimize the potential for damage to the Grand Conservatory and the rest of the tropical plant collection,” said Isaiah Smith, Horticulture & Operations Supervisor. “We hope to identify and source a suitable species with a smaller mature height to add to the collection.”

Rather than discarding the tree, the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens plans to repurpose the palm’s trunk as part of a new epiphytic plant display. The exhibit will highlight the life cycles of various tropical plant species and demonstrate how epiphytes grow in natural environments.
