Hywel Dda University Health Board is calling on volunteers to help maintain two new therapeutic gardens at Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli, designed to support patient recovery and wellbeing.

The gardens, backed by a recent fundraising appeal, will serve the 15-bed Mynydd Mawr rehabilitation ward and the 15-bed Bryngolau older adult mental health ward.

Gareth Phillips, senior charge nurse on Mynydd Mawr ward, said: “These gardens will make a huge difference to the wellbeing and recovery of our patients.

“Having volunteers to help maintain them ensures they remain vibrant and welcoming spaces for everyone.”

Lauren Hughes, ward manager at Bryngolau, said: “The new gardens have received such amazing support from our local communities, and we hope this will continue with our gardening volunteers who will really support wellbeing on the wards.”

The gardens are set to open in April 2026.

Hywel Dda is seeking volunteers with gardening experience and a good working knowledge of seasonal garden maintenance.

Nicola Llewelyn, head of Hywel Dda Health Charities, said: “Ongoing support from our local communities is so important.

“These gardens were made possible thanks to generous donations, and volunteers will help us sustain their impact for years to come.”

Expressions of interest must be submitted by January 26, 2026, by emailing hdd.futureworkforceteam@wales.nhs.uk.
