The most tedious part of any job is getting materials from point A to point B. Whether it was moving mulch for my parents or stacks of tile when I worked a summer in flooring, transporting heavy loads to and fro is the most loathsome task. It’s worth investing in a quality garden cart to ease the pain, and for years, my top choice has been Gorilla Carts.

I used the brand’s steel carts for my warehouse job, though I think they’re a bit overkill for lawn-and-garden use at home. Plus, you’d have to lay a tarp down in them if you’re moving dirt or unpacked mulch. The Platonic ideal of the Gorilla Carts selection—for me—is the brand’s Poly Dump Cart. It has a durable steel frame, a quick-release dump handle, and pneumatic tires that glide over uneven terrain.

A glorified wagon—in a good way

Although they’re referred to as “garden carts,” to me, this is an overbuilt wagon—and that’s a plus. It only requires muscle memory from childhood Radio Flyers, and pretty much anyone can operate it. There’s no need to meticulously balance its load as you would with a wheelbarrow.

Assembling the Gorilla Cart is straightforward, though I find anything with an axle to be somewhat tedious. Its step-by-step instructions were clear: the included stainless-steel hardware feels sturdy, from the wheel’s bushings and retainer pins down to the frame’s locking mechanism. My Gorilla Cart was up and rolling in about half an hour.

A huge selling point for me is that Gorilla Carts have replaceable parts you can purchase; Everything from the polypropylene tub to the spring-loaded dump handle to the steel frame can be swapped. While the tub is durable, you may still crack it if you haul rocks or concrete, and it’s nice to know that one crack won’t total the cart.

Easy to maneuver and dumps without tilting

The cart has zero-turn steering, meaning it turns within its own radius—there’s no need to take wide turns or reverse and go forward a bunch of times to make a turn. Its pull handle swivels inward well past 90 degrees, enhancing easy maneuverability.

Pneumatic wheels are also a big part of why this thing is so easy to move. The 10-inch high tires glide over grass, dirt, and uneven surfaces, but make sure they’re filled with air before a job. I’ve noticed they deflate quite a bit between uses, but it’s an easy fix to fill them back up with a bike pump. There’s noticeable wear and tear on the wheels, but that’s to be expected after years of use and not always storing it in the garage. Again, when the time comes, they’re replaceable!

The most impressive and useful feature of the Poly Yard Cart is its quick-release dumping: simply release the spring-loaded handle, lift the tub, and empty the contents. The tub pivots on the frame so even the heaviest load is easy to fully dump, and it’s helpful that it sits at a shorter, squat height.

Final Thoughts

The Gorilla Carts Poly Garden Cart is ideal for home lawn and garden use as well as professional landscaping jobs. I find the 4-cu. ft. capacity to be perfect, but larger jobs may require the 7-cu. ft. option.

It worked moving five yards of mulch and five yards of topsoil (that’s 10 yards total!), is frequently used to move potted plants, and you can throw a couple of kids in there if needed. Replaceable parts extend the life of the cart well past cheaper options, though you won’t be needing them anytime soon—the Gorilla Cart is super durable out of the box.
