Unfortunately didn't pay a ton of attention to the trees when we moved into our house, but noticed the decline of a silver maple the previous owners had cut. It's rotting where the cut was made – Assuming the cut was made because it was leaning towards the house. I'm no expert, but it looks like it's going to kill the tree entirely.

Assuming this should be removed (and soon), but curious if anyone has any additional thoughts. Thanks, all!

Silver maple doing silver maple things. They are horrible yard trees in my opinion, but often look much worse than they actually are. Have an arborist check it out. If you’re really wanting to keep it you can have a sonogram done and see approximately how much viable wood remains, but the tree doesn’t look great.

Would have to have someone look at to say for sure but in my experience I would say that the risk of failure is moderate. But this depends on a few more things. If the tree were to fail, would it hit that red house? If so, I would remove the tree. It looks like there’s enough decent holding wood, so failure likely isn’t imminent. You probably have a bit of time to remove.
