Foo Fighters will be undertaking their immediate shows without guitarist Pat Smear. Smear, a fellow Nirvana veteran alongside Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, recently injured his left foot and is unable to play the band’s upcoming shows for the time being. In his place will be Jason Falkner of Beck and St. Vincent fame. Foo Fighters commented:
“In the classic tradition of rockstars having bizarre gardening accidents, Pat Smear has apparently rung in the new year by smashing the shit out of his left foot.
This means he’ll unfortunately be missing a few shows while the multiple broken bones in his foot heal. We’ll miss our beloved Pat as much as you will, but we want him fully healed and back on his feet as soon as possible.
Beck and St. Vincent guitar wizard Jason Falkner will be filling in for Pat while he’s on the mend.”
It’s unclear whether or not Smear actually suffered the injury in a gardening accident or the band were merely giving a nod to ‘Spinal Tap‘. Still, there is a history of bizarre gardening-related injuries being suffered by rock and metal royalty, including the likes of Ronnie James Dio severing his thumb back in 2003, Queen‘s Brian May tearing his gluteus maximus in 2000, and more.
Regardless, Smear won’t be missing too much time on the road it would seem, as the band only have the following trio of shows booked until May:
01/10 Guanajuato, MEX – Feria Estatal de León
01/14 Los Angeles, CA – KIA Forum (feat. XCOMM)
01/24 Launceston, TAS – UTAS Stadium (feat. Full Blower, Moon Band & Spooky Eyes)
The Foo Fighters have weathered injuries of a similar fashion before. may recall back in 2015 when Grohl himself broke his leg after falling offstage, leading him to finish out the band’s touring from an elaborate throne. That throne later got some use on the road from Guns N’ Roses vocalist Axl Rose after he suffered a broken foot in 2016.
