  1. I try every year with meh results, altho cabbage does well. This year I'm trying zip bags.

  2. Winter sowers are suggesting people in most climates start seeds later because of the weather swings that have been more common in recent years…if we have a warm streak of weather and seeds sprout, then a cold spell comes, the sprouts can get killed. I’m starting in February this year here in zone 8A. Try winter sowing… it simply works!!

  3. I’m in Nevada and I’m not sure if I can winter down with daytime temps in the 50’s and evening temps in the 40’s.

  4. Just goes to show you that many things can be made to be overcomplicating like seed starting. Seeds will just grow when given a couple basic things. No need for a bunch of expensive stuff.

  5. We've been SO WARM this year, I don't think winter sowing would even work for us this time around. It's currently going to be 60° F today! We're usually in the single digits this time of year, but we've been hovering around the mid-20s to 40's since December, with only a few normal winter days.

  6. Omg!! I always start my peppers wicked early… mid jan, so I have nearly fruiting plants when I plant out the garden. We always seem to get heavy frosts after I plant no matter when I do it. And when that happened the first year I planted peppers that were that old, they not only lived, but came back quickly and I canned all those peppers. But I never thought to put them in milk jugs so I don’t have to repot ALL the time! Amazing idea. Totally kicking myself for not thinking of that.

  7. Just wanted to hear more about winter sowing root crops. I thought they didn't like transplanting. You don't have issues about that?

  8. How far north can this work? I would think in zone 3, we get some warm stretches, well above freezing for weeks, 2 months before last frost.

  9. Yay Luke! I remember a few years ago when you were sceptical about this method of seed sowing. It works wonderfully and I’m so glad you have an open mind to try new (old) ideas. That’s what I love about your channel is that you are always learning and sharing that knowledge with your viewers. You have grown a great gardening community here on this channel. Happy gardening for 2026.

  10. I use a utility knife for cutting the jug and putting slits in the bottom instead of holes. Works good for starting apple seads. So far, one tree out of five with good apples on it.
