COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. — The Master Gardeners of Montgomery County are holding two workshops on Winter Sowing at the Farm, Home & Youth Complex (formerly 4-H Center), 1015 Bridge Road (Route 113), Collegeville, PA 19426. One workshop will be on Friday, January 16, 2026 and the other one will be on Saturday, January 17, 2026. Each session runs from 9:30 to 11:00 AM.

Winter sowing is a method of starting seeds outdoors during the winter. Each workshop will cover the benefits of this method of germinating seeds and the advantages it has over indoor seed-starting. In addition to learning winter sowing techniques, what materials are needed and what seeds can be used, participants will make a mini greenhouse in a container and sow seeds to take home with them. The workshop will also cover how to plant the seedlings once they germinate.

Workshop presenters are Virginia Cunningham, Lori Curtis and Sandie Menke, Penn State Montgomery County Master Gardeners who have been winter sowing seeds successfully for many years. Master Gardeners are volunteers who have been specially trained and certified by Penn State Extension and provide education on a broad range of horticultural topics and practices based on university research and recommendations.

There is no charge for these workshops. No previous gardening experience is needed and all materials will be provided. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. To register, call 1-877-345-0691 and specify which session you want to attend. If you have any questions, call 1-610-489-4315. Free parking is available.
