A Bob Sakson painting of Stony Brook.
The Garden State Watercolor Society will honor the late New Jersey artist Bob Sakson with a special exhibition of his work at D&R Greenway Land Trust’s Johnson Education Center from Jan. 5 to Feb. 4.
Sakson, who died in 2020 at 82, was a celebrated watercolor artist and teacher, an emeritus member of the Garden State Watercolor Society, and a Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society.
Known for his en plein air realism, Sakson spent his career capturing New Jersey’s landscapes and historic sites. The exhibition features his paintings of familiar and timeless scenes, including Allentown, historic Walnford in Monmouth County, Cassville, Colliers Mill, Lambertville, Mount Airy, Stockton, Titusville, Washington Crossing, several South Jersey shore locations, and nearby Churchtown, Pa.
A public reception is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Johnson Education Center. Light refreshments will be served, and all are welcome to attend.
The 36 original works in the show were donated by Sakson’s widow, Carla Sakson, to the Garden State Watercolor Society in his honor. Most of the paintings are unmatted and unframed, sized 18-by-20 inches and larger.
Sixty-five percent of each sale will fund future Garden State Watercolor Society artist awards in Sakson’s name, and 35% will support D&R Greenway Land Trust’s work to preserve and care for land and to inspire a conservation ethic.
The D&R Greenway art galleries at One Preservation Place are open to the public on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and are closed on weekends and holidays. Admission is free.
