Hi there! Last year I did an air layering of a larger rosemary plant growing in our garden and think it might be interesting for some, so I thought about sharing it here 🙂

The mother plant is about 9 years old. I used IBA (2% as powder, as a suspension in some water) as rooting hormone applied on the cut, moist sphagnum moss as substrate and a thick plastic bag for covering. The process was initiated in late April and it took only about 3 weeks until the first roots showed. After 6 weeks, the branch was cut, planted in a mix of pumice and more sphagnum moss in a pond basket and some branches were removed to make sure sufficient support from the developing root system was guaranteed.

In the weeks after, the plant created tons of roots and after 2 more months, the substrate was exchanged to a free-draining mix of pumice, akadama and coconut fibre (I guess there are many other substrates that would work equally or even better). I currently try to bring the plant safely over the winter in an unheated greenhouse, so far it looks good 🙂

Best wishes from Germany!
