Hellebores, called Christmas or Lenten roses, are shade-lovers that flower in the middle of winter. They produce showy, cupped flowers in white, pink, purple, and bi-coloured shades of maroon. Hellebores can also grow in containers, where they require rich, well-drained soil. They require little care, in addition to being frost hardy, thus the preferred choice for balcony gardeners in January.
