Full planning permission and listed building consent is sought from Warrington Borough Council for the refurbishment of garden space at the Red Lion pub in Stockton Heath.
The applicant, brewery company Daniel Thwaites, also wants to relocate existing pergola structures at the London Road venue to new positions.
Further work would include new lighting, floor finishes, landscaping, and reconfigured storage areas, including additional outdoor toilets.
The Grade II-listed Red Lion has been situated on the main frontage of London Road since the 1800s, originally a coaching inn named The Lion and Lamb.
“The building has gone through a series of changes over its history and has become a hub for live music, sports, and events, with the garden being a particularly popular commodity due to its size,” planning documents state.
“Previous applications have been sought to develop the external area, with the addition of extra toilets to service the business better, and a full refurbishment internally to maintain the personality of the building.
“In its current state, the garden has two low-lying, self-supporting pergola structures, a timber pergola from the rear exit of the pub around to the patio, a remote bar, and a loosely designated play space for children.
“The intention is to develop the outdoor area in a manner in keeping with the current offering of the business, while drawing on local influences to create a space that reflects its surroundings and history.
“The development will see additions of raised brick planters, new walls, and fencing to define the kids’ area, and individual seating spaces with the existing pergolas repositioned to form a larger covered section for use in all weather conditions.
“This will give the opportunity for the project to introduce more greenery and landscaping, mixed in with more flexible and serviceable spaces that will bring long-term practicality to the outdoor space.”
A central feature will act as an anchor point for the design, plans state, with new planting, feature lighting, and seating.
The extra toilet block added in the previous round of refurbishments is to be extended, and the existing outdoor bar will be reconfigured.
“The aim of this proposal is to ensure that the business can continue to deliver the exemplary service it has become known for, while taking into consideration the significant history surrounding the site,” documents add.
“Improving and enhancing the garden area will complement previous refurbishment work on the main pub itself, as well as other minor works carried out externally, allowing the business inside and out to feel wholly considered and connected.
“The work itself will not affect the bearing of the building, its identity or historic importance, and it will be managed by the team on a day-to-day basis, with ample space on site to contain working materials and tools.”
