Acer monspessulanum/ Montpellier maple is native tree in Europe. On long petioles are small three-lobed leaves that turns yellow in autumn. It is decidious tree, slow growing species with a very hard wood. This maple species is best adapted to dry conditions, growing on dry, gravelly slopes, and acidic, shallow, and rocky soils.
Making ramification on this tree is a challenge.
What are your experiences with this species?

Great trunk and I like your decision to reduce/remove the competing one. Ive never encountered the species, not native to Ireland.
