In Grafting Plants

How do I figure out which is up or down? Some spines point up, some down. Some on top of areoles, some not. I couldn’t be more confused.

Trying desperately to root a bunch of stems with no leaves or shoots, but I’m pretty sure I have at least half of them upside trying to root.

I think the areoles slightly face upwards. The direction it is now seems right from this far away shot
