CANANDAIGUA — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County’s series of free master gardener programs is set to begin soon.

Programs via Zoom start at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14 and continue every other Wednesday through March.

Gardening Challenges

Ontario County Master Gardener Patti Albert shares her experiences Jan. 14 in Gardening Challenges, which calls on her 38 years of gardening and landscaping the property of her 1870 brick schoolhouse. Irrigation, space, weather, and topography are among the challenges Albert will cover. She will recount bushwacking an overgrown backyard, gardening with a shallow well, hungry woodchucks and more.

Creating a Fresh Herb Garden

Master Gardeners Erika Pfeiffer, Michelle Bartell and Sue Craugh will guide participants through the world of gardening with herbs during this program Jan. 28. They will be giving a presentation on what and how to grow both annual and perennial herbs, including selecting plants, their beneficial uses in the garden, and how to use them in cooking. They will walk participants through the tools and planting instructions and when and how to harvest herbs for top quality. They will also provide recipes for using herbs and other resources.

Grasses and Sedges

Master Gardener Sandy Ebberts on Feb. 11 will highlight grasses and sedges that can replace lawns, making for an area that needs mowing only once a year. Ebberts will also show how taller grasses can create backdrops borders or a grassy meadow.

Essential Garden Tools and Tactics for Single Households and Limited Budgets

Participants who attend this webinar Feb. 25 will gain tips, tricks, and hacks for the most gratifying single-handed gardening experience. A list of recommended tools and garden practices will be provided.

How to Design a Meadow in Your Yard

This webinar on March 11 will focus on how to use native plants to replace areas of lawn to create a bustling native meadow. Design principles, embracing succession and change, determining the right plants for site conditions and maximizing habitat, and ecological benefits will be covered.

Peonies in the Garden

This presentation from Cornell Cooperative Extension Educator Russ Welser on March 25 will address planting, fertility, pest problems, fall care, varieties, cut flower use and more.
