Majority of yard seems to be dead. First time having a yard. Do I just rake it all up?

  1. Is there grass under that mess or just weeds?

    Nah, it’ll disintegrate in spring.

Noo! Please leave the leaves as they are. Pollinators and other beneficial insect and bird species depend on leaf coverage to continue to populate. Moving the leaves before the average temperature is above 50°F is guaranteed to disrupt their ecology in a detrimental way. Less work too 🙂

Plus, they will disintegrate and enrich your soil

Yes, if you want grass or wait til spring and rototill the entire yard. Then re-seed.

Hard to see, but burning that in the spring might help you start fresh. Just be VERY careful, do it on a high humidity, low wind day and have hoses ready. Water the edges proactively to keep it from spreading.

Just mulch them with a mower if they get in the way.

Yeah, don’t you belong to a forest-rake-up group already? How do you think forests work without that important manual yearly cleanup?

If you don’t mind the way it looks. Mow and mulch whatever is left in the spring.

Leaf blower would work much better than a rake with those grasses.

Leaving it makes no difference. I personally blow my leafs into a mulch pile to use in garden beds

I get small patches of leaves that get between the grass/weeds like that. If I don’t blow or rake them, there will be a dirt spot void of any grass or weeds in the spring in each spot. If I leave them, the patches just get worse and larger.

So, I remove them earlier in the year and replant with seed and cover lightly with straw to avoid patches. Every year it’s the same but now I have less bald spots and more grass without a lot of effort.
