There are no dead sections. It fully leafs out every year. But there’s a huge section where the bark is just rotting off of the tree. How much trouble is this tree in?

I wouldn’t try to Maple-leaf it’s going to live very much longer.

It’s near its natural end of life.

You can either choose when and where it comes down or the tree will choose it for you.

Obviously it’s in decline, but I have old maple stumps that look like this and have kept growing for 20 years. If it’s not in danger of hitting something, it may go on leafing out for a long time.

Bruh. That sucker is a ticking time bomb. There is a ton of rotten wood on the main trunk I’m guessing it’s cork wood at least 1/3 of the way through. The longer it is delayed for removal the more dangerous and costly it becomes to remove. Do not delay removing this.

Enjoy it through its decline, it’s still very much alive but if it is not a danger to walking paths or structures, it is absolutely a keeper. So much wildlife will benefit from her as she finishes out her twilight years.

Break out the avocado. It’s toast.

Totes fine. Mulch & expose the root flare 😉
