You are going to love your cattle trellises.
What to grow. I grow Luffas, Seminole Pumpkins and cucumbers on mine.
I have used concrete wire as well. It’s heavier than regular chicken wire or the 4 x 4 wire that you have showing there it also comes in a roll so you can throw it in the back of the truck easier than the cattle panels and it comes in 25 foot rolls or 50 foot rolls. I’ve used it before for my cucumbers. I use it now for my tomatoes works great.
Oh dang, he pulled out the grinder and cut it. I would've tried to convince you to fold the edges to make it shorter that way buuut I get it — "pretty!" 😁 Can't wait to see what other tools besides angle grinders you folks use around the garden on your projects.
I'll say it: Your husband is a "hunk"!! Anyhoo, thanks for another great one.
I've built 6 of these. I put the panels between The t-posts.
It gives them a little more stability from the tension between the four posts.
Love that arch! Got me thinking now…
I love my cattle panels. I bought them years ago when they were much more affordable. I dont know if I could garden with out them. Beans, peas, tomatoes, peppers…I prop them all up against the panels. People can save themselves from having to cut panels by putting them in the beds along the long sides instead of the short sides of the beds.
I live in southeast Georgia and my local Tractor Supply has a delivery service. Viewers may want to call their local TS for availability and pricing.
Hating my HOA! So jealous and inspired of your setup.
Cattle panels is all we use. We bought them going on eight years ago. I have moved them around, made arches, taken arches down. We just put one in two new beds today. I am learning to put them in the middle of the beds in order to be able to reach two feet, instead of four feet. They have stood up to wind with no problems. I know you will enjoy them.
would put wire on trellis while zip ties are holding it. the florida sun will cook the zip ties pretty quick
We bought 6 2'x8' metal raised beds and paired them up about 4' apart. We built 3 arches using a total of 6 panels. Now we can put climbing vines near the panels and shorter stuff on the outside of the bed. We get to walk under them and pick beans, cucamelons and squash in mid summer and peas at either end of the hot weather seasons.
Cattle panels are 50" x 16'. Setting the arch bottoms 7' apart gives you a nice arch that most folks can reach to pick. They used to be $21 at TSC way back when i bought mine, now $35 around here. Do a double arch for pole beans if you have the room! You can just walk through a 100" tunnel and pick all the beans hanging down.
We saw the same video, went to TSS to buy two 16’ panels, and the loading guy argued with us that he does it his way all the time … blah, blah, blah. Well, half way home, both panels got loose and popped out of our truck! We’re so grateful no one was on this country road was injured. We don’t let anyone secure our panels from now on 🤦🏻♀️ I have loofah and birdhouse gourds on my plant list for next Spring. We use metal zip ties using the tightening/cutting tool with excellent results
I brought home 8 of the cattle panels in one shot. It was not hard in the back of my Mazda pick up. That was 10 years ago. used three for a covered chicken run and the rest for my garden.
I just used a small grinder and cut off the two ends on the panels so I had spikes. Then bent them into arches and stuck the spikes in the ground. Then planted next to the outside of the panels. I then put some non Vining plants that needed shade in the ground on the inside ( like cabbage ) right by the panel sides. In the winter I plant inside them and through row cover material over them.
I've got ten of them, planning on buying some more
Cattle panels are not hard! Those you have there look like goat panels that used to be about twice as expensive as the actual cattle panels, and weigh more. I haven't even looked at the prices in the last 8-10 years, but the last time I checked the actual cattle panel price it was around $25-30 for the 4'x16'
The metal clips come with the trellis at no additional cost at tractor supply.
I purchased my cattle panels from tractor supply and they delivered mine to my home. That might be an option.
If you buy online from Home Depot they will deliver 4 free!!! And there's no minimum!!!!
When I put my cattle panels in I left about a foot of space between the bottom of the panel and the ground. It gives me a foot of height for my plants that grow lots. The plants I trellis on panels can handle not being supported for the first bit of growth. I also found doing the arched panels with fast growing plants helped my plants that needed some shade from the New Mexico sun. By the time the intense heat starts I have some decent growth to protect my more heat sensitive plants.
I had a buddy who was picking up some panels and she brought one over for me. Decided to place it long ways on a 16’ row which was perfect and unintentional 😂
Its on the outside of the last row and the plan is to use it for cucumbers, beans etc. ours was even heavier duty so it’s practically inflexible.
I’d get the smaller squares like yours to build an arch
I Have bought several of these for garden and a chicken coop. They are nice and sturdy and have handled the hurricanes as well..would transport 3 at a time in my truck, fold them into an arch and ratchet strap them . We’re easier to move that way too, kinda could roll them when by myself. I believe they are actually 50” wide, so I had to curl the into the corner of the bed. I did use the T post clips, rather than ties due to hurricanes and not having to worry replacing ties.. I think you will love the change..
Those look like Hog Lot panels rather than cattle panels, the squares are different, and they cost more if you got them for the same price you got lucky.
We have several cattle panels also haul them in a short bed truck, all ya have to do is arch them to fit and tie the open ends, I can haul 5 with a helper to load.
Installing them on the inside of the posts is how to do it so the tension is against the post, we also use t-post clips to attach which is much safer than a cheap zip tie and will last forever. Lastly if you raise the straight ones up 10-12" off the bed the plants will reach them and have more height to grow if needed.
your gonna love those panels !! I keep getting more !! im at 10 !! Great job!
I rented a truck to get mine. I got 16 foot cattle panels. Ratchet straps were very useful when putting them up
You owe your husband BIG!!! Hope it works out for you. Happy growing.
Thanks for your timely video! My husband and I were preparing to put up a trellis, and we were considering using a cattle panel. We watched your video and were inspired! We bought the items we needed yesterday, and today I have a beautiful, sturdy trellis that spans from the center of one 17-inch raised bed to the center of the other. The arch is perfect! I'm so looking forward to planting my green beans in a few weeks. I can still plant my smaller plants around the edges of the beds, and I can reach everything. I'm 4 ft 10 inches, and 67 years old, so reaching can be hard for me. This was a great solution that I am hoping will last for years. Thanks again for the video and inspiration!
When we bought ours, I got free delivery when I opened a tractor supply credit card because there was a promotion. Watch for deals. You could have put extra posts outside side your beds and bend it so you didn’t need to cut it and would give you extra space.
I love seeing the husbands actively participating in their wives' hobbies/interests. What a blessing 🙌🏾!
Suggest putting t posts on outside of the cattle panel to keep it from breaking loose and hurting someone.
Glad to have the info and to finally see the Mister. I've got a fella that could be his twin and He's got one of those metal blade cutters among his many tools. Thanks so much for sharing this video so I can show him what I want. Like your guy, he's amazing at making these things happen. I'm just the humble assistant too. 😉 Thanks again.
