ELVERTA — Sacramento County Regional Parks has officially announced the addition of a new Community Garden at Gibson Ranch Regional Park, bringing a new opportunity for residents to grow their own food right in the heart of the Rio Linda and Elverta area.

While the project was officially announced by the County just this week, registration for garden plots has actually been open since December 1st. Residents interested in securing a space for the upcoming growing season are encouraged to act quickly, as availability may be limited given the early opening of the application window.

Located within the scenic 355-acre Gibson Ranch—a staple for Rio Linda and Elverta families for its open fields and working-ranch atmosphere—the new garden adds a unique resource to our local landscape. The project is designed to be a space where neighbors can connect with the land and each other.

“We’re excited to welcome residents to this beautiful new space where neighbors can learn, grow and cultivate not just plants, but community,” said Liz Bellas, Director of Sacramento County Regional Parks.

Features of the Garden The new facility includes:

48 Standard Plots: Measuring roughly 20′ x 20′.

Accessible Options: 12 raised accessible beds are available (eight small 7.5′ x 7.5′ plots and four large 7.5′ x 20′ plots).

The “Food Forest”: An adjacent area featuring fruit-bearing trees and native edible plants. This section is intended for community stewardship, with initial tree plantings already underway.

Rules and Regulations In keeping with a sustainable model, the garden will be strictly organic. No synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides are permitted. Gardeners will also be expected to help maintain common areas and pathways, fostering a sense of shared ownership. The garden will be accessible during standard park hours, from dawn to dusk.

How to Register Plots are available to all Sacramento County residents, who will receive priority status. Non-residents may apply if space allows.

Whether you are a seasoned grower or a first-timer looking to get your hands dirty, this new addition to Gibson Ranch offers a fantastic way to utilize one of our community’s most beloved parks. Stay tuned for future updates regarding volunteer workdays and the formation of an advisory committee.
