We had a windstorm a few days back and a huge limb (1/3rd of the tree) came off. I know losing limbs is normal in a storm, but this is so much of the tree, do I need to investigate the health of the remainder more fully?
I think it’s a eucalyptus, in central coast California area. Can provide more specific pictures if needed.
Thanks!!!

Okay, not an arborist, but my time browsing this sub tells me that a wound that size is going to start rotting before the tree can contain it. It looks like there was already rot in the part that broke off. The blackened part on top of the break.

A poorly-attached limb failed, very common.
Will it close over? No. Will the tree die tomorrow? No. Will it die a year from now? No. 5 years? probably not. 10 years? getting closer…
