“Apple and pear trees benefit from January pruning to maintain shape and encourage fruiting,” says Julian.

To do this, he recommends removing dead, diseased, or crossing branches, then shortening last year’s growth by a third to outward-facing buds.

Other fruit trees that need pruning include fig trees, gooseberries, redcurrants, blackberries, and autumn-fruiting raspberries. “These need a hard prune now, cutting fruited canes right back.”
