My yard doesn't grow grass. Its mostly dirt and lava rock. Weeds starting to get taller by my door. Neighbors cut their grass recently and it now makes these weeds look taller. Should I leave cut with weed whacker or pull out weeds but will make the yard look more like dirt.

If you don’t have any other plants growing, weeds will take over.

This subreddit is about planned alternatives to lawns, not about letting weeds take over your front yard.
Also, your sidewalk has trip hazards that should either be made more visible or fixed. Pull the weeds inthe sidewalk.

    Where are you located?

This appears to be cheeseweed mallow (Malva parviflora) or a similar sp. Can’t confirm with a pic from this distance. It’s invasive in North America & should not be grown.

Additionally, with location info we can provide resources or suggestions for native plants that will have a much easier time surviving in your climate & soil than turf grass will.

That looks like a lot of mallow. If so it’s all deeply taprooted and pretty annoying to mechanically remove. That Mediterranean spurge standing tall is easy to just dig out though. The most efficient way to deal with an overgrowth that has essentially no native plants is herbicide treatment and then mulching over everything. You can then start planting things that you actually want in the mulch bed. You can cut it, but you’re going to be at it for a while before you exhaust those mallow.

Hand pull then seed with native flowers.
