Tree had been dead for a season and I just got around to chopping it up. Very large/deep bore holes throughout with many containing an insect in a sack. I cut one of the sacks open so I could get a closer look. Thoughts? Was this a factor or did these guys move in afterwards? Want to protect the rest of the property of this is an infestation!

Spruce bark beetle. If you have other living spruce on the property, get them treated next spring. The timing needs to be just right to so consult a local arborist/plant health care company.
