Bird lovers around the UK have been advised to sow one particular plant from now if they want to attract robins to their garden. The tip comes just in handy as during the cold weather, the stunning birds’ primary food sources, such as worms and insects, begin to take cover underground, making the winter season slightly more challenging for them.
However, planting camassia now for it to bloom in the springtime is the perfect way to draw Robins to your outdoor spaces, according to experts.
The strong and long-lived plants are known for attracting pollinators and aphids, which are both part of a robin’s diet, to gardens with their bright blue flowers. Therefore, as well as enhancing the beauty of your garden, they also contribute significantly to an important ecosystem for birds, allowing them to thrive.
According to House Beautiful, experts at the RHS advise planting camassia in moist, not waterlogged, soil in full sun or light shade, and when left undisturbed, the gorgeous plants will increase in numbers over the years, creating a feast for not only flocks of birds but bees and butterflies.
It is also recommended that, if you are growing the plant in containers, you replant them after a maximum of two years.
Ensuring that birds are well-fed when visiting your gardens is especially important during the winter. Gardeners should ensure that their bird feeders are placed in a quiet and safe area away from any predators and well-stocked.
Crushed peanuts, sunflower seeds and mealworms are recommended for robins as they are a few of the birds’ favourite treats. A well-stocked and reliable food source is crucial for the survival and wellbeing of robins and other garden birds throughout the winter.
Planting the beautiful bulbs is an additional way to make your garden a bird-friendly environment, and planting them now means that when spring comes, you’ll be able to enjoy a set of beautiful blue blooms throughout the warmer seasons.
