  1. I buy a lot of seeds from True Leaf Market (Mountain Valley Seeds) since they are local for me. I've never had issues with seeds being short. Are you sure your seed cells are 50? or 55? Otherwise, I bet if you call them they will compensate you for the shortage. They are a really great family owned company.

  2. Laura I try diatomaceous earth also nothing seems to work very well sprinkling it on top of the soil with my house plants I can't wait to try this to see if it works on these fungus gnats 🥴

  3. I bought lots of seeds from trueleaf/mountain valley last season. I my germ rate was ~50%. I don’t think I’ll order more from them again.

  4. Seed count: They could be packaging them by weight and that makes the actual count off.

  5. Those little wax paper envelopes that hold the seeds are designed to evenly distribute the tiny seeds by gripping and softly folding the packet and tapping lightly to cause the seeds to barely fall toward the sawtooth edge that holds back too many seeds from falling out but helps us control the fall of just one or two seeds. It’s amazing how well it is designed to work.

  6. Hi Laura, just curious, why do you use organic potting mix when you aren’t planting food? Is it better for the flowers?

  7. I’ve been feeling it! It’s time!! Oh the new garden season. Every year our gardens become more beautiful and mature. Thrilling really 😍

  8. I use neem oil to spray soil when I start seeds, which really works! I thought I got that info from you, but apparently not. Maybe Erin, the Impatient Gardener. Do you see a down side? I had zero gnats in my basement last spring and the plants seemed fine. I always lose some, but nothing drastic to indicate that the neem oil was harmful.

  9. Thak you for being such a wealth of information! Before finding your channel I was intimidated to start from seed but now its something i look forward to every winter. Question: I've heard that pansies and violas need a cold stratification period; do you find this to be true or is it unnecessary? On an unrelated note, I think the silvery plant from your holiday arrangement awhile back is called a cushion bush, native to Australia. Happy holidays and looking forward to the 2026 gardening season!

  10. Do your parents weigh their seed packages or do they count them? I can't imagine counting would be an efficient method in a retail store, but for companies that ship them, they should count how many are in them. Especially if they say the number on the envelope. I wonder if a pill counter would be able to do that or if there's another machine that does it. I know herb seeds are also very tiny. 🌱

  11. Cathy V. here from Appling, Georgia! Hey Laura! You & your sweet family showed up on my YouTube feed this past January and I’ve had dirt under my fingernails ever since! Thank you for all your inspiration! I had ordered the paper pots w/ tray from the Garden Answer website earlier this year and plan to use them here shortly. I am looking to buy humidity domes. The measurement for the tray on the website says it is 24 x 12 inches. The biggest dome that I can find on-line is approximately 21 x 11 inches. Can you tell me where you got your domes? This will be my first time with seed starting and I’m so excited! Thank you for all your help!

  12. Lol, I also keep count of the number of seeds in the packets. Being shorted 16 out of 100 seeds is beyond the acceptable margin of error. The fact that all the packets were shorted is terrible. Hopefully the company will be informed of this discrepancy and correct the problem.

  13. This year I'm starting when you start. I've got my paper seed trays. Headed to nursery to get seed starter soil, vermiculite, and seeds. No grow lights. Hoping for sunny days. My partners birthday is on the first of January. Bought him a t-shirt: "Happy New Year? I thought you were here for my birthday!" Happy New Year & Happy Birthday.

  14. I never put away my seed starting supplies from this past season lol. Question 🙋🏻‍♀️-does seed starting mix get old? Should I buy a new bag each year? I didn’t think it contains many nutrients or am I wrong 🤔. 😊

  15. Hi Laura. I tried looking up this Natural product that you added into the soil for Nats and I can’t find anything called Natural (bt derivative). Could you send a link or let us know where to buy it? Thank you.

  16. Decades ago I had like an apricot colored pansy that I planted in the summer and they bloomed all winter. In Ohio! Everytime the snow melted there they were, blooming under the snow. I don’t remember the name.😕

  17. Have you ever grown Vinca from seeds? I would love some of your wisdom in doing it successfully. I tried last year with no luck. I love vinca so much because nothing bothers them as far as bugs go.

  18. Hi Laura! I usually buy the fine vermiculite but got the larger pellets like yours by mistake? Will Snapdragon & Poppy seeds make their way through?

  19. I always think I’m not getting as many seeds as I’m paying for but I thought it was just me! And I’m too lazy to actually count the seeds so I could never go back to the company to complain.

  20. I sure hope she recognizes her mistake about the seed packet count and the seed company doesn't get any backlash for this.
Those paper pots were 2 different sizes, 50 count and 55 count.
Someone should let her and the seed company know, it was an honest mistake on her part. We all know the Garden Answer affect on companies. 😊

  21. Thank you, Laura. Just wondering if you ever use heat mats for germination. If so, generally what type of seeds do you use them for?

  22. Laura—-I recently invested in a few carnivorous plants (drosera) for my grow room. I can literally see the fungus gnats sticking to their leaves! Just thought I’d try it this year as nothing else has seemed to work super well 🙁
