Winter might make your lawn look like it’s switched off, but it still needs care. Roots are quietly growing, moisture is shifting through the soil, and the choices you make now decide how green and healthy it will be in spring. That’s why proper winter grass care matters, even if the lawn looks asleep.
Even if you’ve finessed your garden’s lawn care routine and you’re sure you’ve got it down to a tee, there’s still room for lawn care mistakes along the way. Gardening and lawn experts have shared one of the most common winter lawn care mistakes to watch out for this season, to ensure you reach spring with healthy, green grass – and that’s not feeding the grass the right fertiliser.
Gardening experts at lawnmower manufacturer Ego Power Plus explained that grass still needs nutrients, even when growth slows.
They said: “A heavy, high-nitrogen feed isn’t right for winter, as it encourages leafy growth that frost can damage. Instead, choose a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertiliser.
“This type of winter lawn treatment focuses on strengthening the roots, improving resilience against disease, and setting the stage for healthier and greener growth in spring.”
Gardening guru Alasdair Boyes at GreenThumb warned that using a generic lawn fertiliser could be “detrimental to the health of your grass”.
He said: “These fertilisers often release nutrients too quickly, and since the grass is dormant in winter, it can’t absorb them effectively.
“As a result, the nutrients get washed away by rain or snowmelt, offering minimal benefit to your lawn.”
Instead, choose a fertiliser designed specifically for the colder months. Winter fertilisers typically contain less nitrogen, which encourages growth, and more potassium, which strengthens the grass and helps it withstand the challenges of frost, damp and disease.
