I did a diy yard reno this fall for turf type tall fescue (went pretty well, even with the late start of germination due to washout problems and some other set-backs). I’m in Nashville, and we have been having SUPER unseasonal warm weather. It’s 72 out right now and has been warm for a week. We’ve only had a few really cold snaps, but it seems like winter has not really set in yet. Which has been GREAT for my baby grass, because as mentioned- I was really worried that I only started getting a decently thick germination by mid-end November.

But this has spread throughout a big portion of the back yard. I seem to recall there are some weeds that are winter germinators. Is this one of them? The warm weather has been stumped. It’s not clover, it’s a flowering plant.

I do need to mow (2nd mow for my grass- yay!) and I’m hoping that’ll bag up a lot of the flowers and help reduce spread. Will this die off on its own? I don’t want to put anything on my young grass.

Common chickweed. It’s a winter annual so yes it will die off but not until late spring

  2. It’s chickweed, it’s an annual, and will go away once cool season ends. If you want to control it, use something like Trimec.
