CRANSTON, R.I. (WJAR) — The group called ROMEO ate it’s last breakfast at Newport Creamery in Garden City Center before the doors are set to close at the Cranston staple this weekend.

ROMEO is an acronym that stands for “Retired Old Men Eating Out.”

“We won’t be returning here unfortunately, it’s very sad to say,” said group member Marcel D’Auteuil.

NBC 10’s Molly Levine reports on the last meeting of ROMEO at Newport Creamery at Garden City Center before it closes. The group plans to meet at Cranston Diner in the new year.

It’s not by choice that the group won’t return to the restaurant that’s hosted their weekly Wednesday breakfast for the past 18 years.

“Newport Creamery here in Garden City is being closed on December 28th, Sunday,” explained D’Auteuil.

After more than 60 years in the location, the grills will be turned off at Newport Creamery in Garden City. Garden City’s corporate owner has ended the lease.

“It’s just been a great experience for me,” said Frank DelSanto, the eldest member of ROMEO, turning 101 years old in February.

The group said that the weekly socialization is good for their health, and they’ll continue their tradition of meeting every Wednesday morning for coffee and conversation.

“Cranston Diner has been around for a long, long time,” said one group member.

Since the doors are closing at Newport Creamery in Garden City, ROMEO will continue to meet at Cranston Diner after the new year.

“Hopefully, everyone here will make it,” said D’Auteuil.
