When it’s time to say goodbye to your Christmas decorations for another year, don’t throw your tree away. Many of us choose to decorate a real tree for the festive season, which can bring joy to our living rooms.
But when it is time to get rid of the decorations, many trees get dumped in the bin. A garden expert has shared three other ways to keep using your tree after all the celebrations are over and done with. His tips are all free to do and can leave you enjoying your Christmas tree for the months to come.
Expert Michael Griffiths, who shares his garden hacks on social media, has urged people not to throw away their trees. He shared three other ways to make use of your tree.
Michael said: “Number one, starting with the bows of the tree cut them off and lay them in your containers and garden beds for frost protection. Or if you want a thicker ground cover, you can put them through a shredder and get some free wood mulch.”
He demonstrated his hack by simply snipping off the branches and laying them out in his garden. Winter is still here and so is the potential for more frost, so this tip is perfect for protecting your garden and plants.
Michael then shared: “Number two, dig a hole and put stump in the ground. Now you have a perfect trellis for climbing plants in the spring. This will be ideal for sweet peas.”
You simply need to stand your Christmas tree in the ground with the branches removed. You will be able to do Michael’s first tip as well as this one as they both require seperate parts of the tree.
It will provide a study base for your spring and summer flowers, while adding wood to your outdoor space. Michael’s final hack is to help look after the wildlife in your garden.
He shared: “And, number three. If you don’t want to go that route, you can always drill some deep holes into the stump. Cut it up, rinse and repeat. Stack it up and now you have got a bug hotel, creating a mini refuge for wildlife.”
