


If I were to trim the branches that cross/rub or go back through the tree, that would be more than half the foliage. Should I just give it a light shaping each year or cut those two branches in the “Y”? (which would cut out a lot of leaves)
It was planted too close to the house and it’s apparently never been shaped before. But the wife enjoys it.
A professional niwaki practitioner could probably make this thing a masterpiece.

Leaving the crossing over at this point; you don’t want to cut the mature branches. Just prune dead wood and then on pruning thinner branches you don’t like
