COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The Brazos Valley doesn’t tend to experience a harsh winter. It’s still important to be ready to protect your plants when the temperatures drop.

“If you have tender crops or tender plants like a newly planted tree that you’re concerned with, you’ve gotta cover that plant to make sure that it survives some of these freezing events that we get,” said Stephen Brueggerhoff with Texas A&M AgriLife.

You can use materials around your home to create the protective barrier for your plant.

Brueggerhoff shows off one option with a tomato case and a bed sheet.

The tomato case goes around the tree or shrub. The bed sheet is then wrapped around the structure.

“One really important tip that I’d like to give to our viewers is, if you have like a tree or a shrub, not to wrap it like a lollipop,” said Brueggerhoff. “You want to make sure that whatever material that you’re using actually touches the ground.”
