I’m visiting my parents for the holiday and noticed this tree seems to have something going on with it. They’re in a high elevation climate. This appears to be the only tree (out of hundreds) that looks like this. Since it towers over the house, I want to make sure if the tree is dying that we take care of it.

  1. Looks like slime flux (bacterial wet wood) on a Siberian elm. It’s very common and, in itself, not a problem for the health of the tree. However I would consider having the co-dominant stem that has the inclusion reduced and/or removed.

Seconding that included bark union no bueno. Reduce weight on that limb, cable it, remove it, or get rid of the whole tree. It’s too close to the building.

I would remove it because of its proximity to & lean towards the house. Take it out before it destroys your roof &/or house
