So do we have termites? Do we need to have someone take a look?
Just noticed this today. Pulled a bit of bark off and saw some critters running around. Just concerned because this is over the house and could be a problem I guess. Appreciate any feedback.

Termites aren’t causing that, that looks like fungal decay. I would get an arborist to come out and at least sound the tree.
If this tree has termites, it is just one of a whole number of things that it is suffering from.
In human we would refer to *Hickam’s dictum:* “*A man can have as many diseases as he damn well pleases*.”
Yeah the tree is decaying from fungus. The insects will come to eat the decaying wood or use the weakened state of the tree to invade
