This is my first pothos plant and I'm wondering what these vines are trying to do – the one on the left is moving toward the grow light; and the one in the foreground is moving toward the edge of the ledge (which is lit by very distant window light). Does the vine on the left want to climb something or does it just want to bask?

Pothos love light. The vines will always crawl towards the closest light source. If you want to propagate, cut off a branch with a node and leave it in water.
I think you answered your own question…
They are looking for something to climb too, not just light. Depending on what you want your pothos to look like, you can let the vines trail, as they are doing now, or give them something to climb onto, like a moss pole or a board, and you’ll see your pothos leaves start to get huge. Look up “mature form pothos” for a sample, or you can see mine in the attached pic. It’s just a regular marble queen pothos they I got in may of last year at a smaller size than yours is now.

Look up “mature form pothos” for what that looks like. Either option looks nice, although I’ve been trying out letting mine climb and it’s gotten pretty big in the year and a half since I’ve gotten it.
