Hello!

So this is my first african violet and I’ve had her for a couple of months. She’s been doing pretty great and has bloomed several times. However, over the past month she’s been suffering: losing leaves and eventually shrinking down to this point. I only bottom water. I might have been doing it a little too frequently because I feel like the soil is always dry. Any suggestions are appreciated!!

RIP. Next one is a smaller, plastic pot with lots of perlite mixed in the soil.

Pot material matters a lot. Terra cotta is a great pot if you’re growing succulents, because it slowly releases moisture through the clay itself. African violets prefer consistently moist, but not soaking wet, soil. If you don’t want a plastic pot, you can still use a ceramic pot, it just needs to be glazed, have drainage holes, and be the right size for the plant (this one is too big for this plant). I also agree with the other poster, that you should rethink soil composition. If you’re not experienced in mixing soil for a particular plant, they do make African violet soil blends you can buy at most any gardening center.
