Inherited what i think is a dead plant. I have no idea what it is or what to do. I thought here would be a good place to start. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Everyone here is saying it’s dead, and they’re right, but I will tell you how I know. You see those big primary roots? See how they’re all contracted and wrinkled? Touch those. They’re gonna be crinkly (papery or leathery) on the outside, and soft (spongy or fibrous) on the inside. It’s dead. Break one open. Check the others. They’re probably all dead.
If any of the roots are actually plump, you could cut that tree down to like 5″ and it MIGHT grow back if you baby it like crazy. But I don’t think you’re gonna win that fight.
Verdict: deceased.

It’s what’s not readily seen below the soil surface that matters most.
