Thank you for the VALUABLE WARNING!
Boy did this video hit hard haha. I planted 2 asparagus about 2 years ago and realized where they were just wouldn't cut it. I made a rash decision to transplant them about 3 weeks ago and let me tell you that was the hardest thing I have ever done in the garden, digging them up. Those roots are something else. I will say I am glad I did it and I think they are going to do just fine in their new home. I am making a video of the process but need to get footage of what happens in a few months before posting.
I planted my crowns upside-down. THAT is the dumbest way possible…I now have blackberries where the asparagus was…😂
I'm pretty sure it's reseeding
I am further south than you, closer to the gulf coast. My ferns never seem to die back. Should I still prune them?
I give my ferns to the cows. They absolutely love them.😂
I'm laughing because I also have asparagus and know how annoying those ferns are. But I love it, so I just use twine to hold them up too and have no problem. Asparagus is one of my "gardening treats". I eat half of it straight off the stalk while I'm gardening and it never makes it to the table. It's wonderful raw when it's also fresh cut. Cherry tomatoes and black berries are my other gardening treats, and occasional green pepper.
Wow, thanks for this. I planted mine 6 years ago and I'm yet to take a harvest. Luckily I planted it at the corner of my driveway that is over 100 feet from my garden. Yes, the ferns are super vigorous.
How about just moving the asparagus this winter? I planted mine in a 4' x 12' patch alongside of my driveway to keep people from parking on the lawn.
When we moved into our house, in the back was a HUGE patch of asparagus. It took up over half the yard. Neighbors say the old owner loved the stuff and religiously tended them. The issue… I hate asparagus. It took YEARS to finally get rid of it. I felt bad getting rid of it since they were so lovingly tended, but damn I hate asparagus. I tried to find anyone who wanted the roots but no one wanted them. Every time I thought I got all the roots, it would still pop up in the spring and show me I failed to get them all for YEARS.
If you harvest the asparagus as it comes up, doesn't that take care of the fern issue? Our asparagus is probably not quite as vigorous as yours, partly because I was never patient enough to wait 2-3 years before harvesting anything (though I did let most of it go). But, still, the ferns never seem to get so thick and tall as to become an obstacle. The asparagus is mostly about six or seven years old now, and even with getting a slow start, still produces more than we can eat for a couple of months in the spring with a smaller harvest in the fall if we trim back the ferns after the first flush, and ferns only form on the unharvested spears, so if we keep up with it, the only ferns we get are the ones on the spindly little spears that are too thin to bother with. Am I missing something?
You've haven't been dumb to plant asparagus, you're probably just too dumb for gardening. 😂
Asparagus roots grow 10 feet deep.
stupid asparagus ferns 😂😂
Please be careful feeding potatoes to dogs:
Potatoes are not inherently toxic to dogs when properly prepared, but certain forms and components can be harmful. Raw potatoes, green parts of potatoes, sprouts, and potato skins contain solanine, a glycoalkaloid toxin that can be dangerous to dogs.
Solanine can cause gastrointestinal distress, neurological issues, and in severe cases, even death.
Cooking reduces solanine levels, making plain, cooked potatoes safe for dogs in moderation.
However, fried or heavily seasoned preparations like French fries, potato chips, or mashed potatoes with butter, garlic, or salt are not safe and can lead to health problems such as pancreatitis, obesity, or toxicity from ingredients like garlic and onion.
Additionally, potato skins contain oxalates, which in large amounts may contribute to kidney issues.
Therefore, while cooked potatoes can be a nutritious treat providing vitamins and minerals, they should be served plain, without additives, and in small quantities, adhering to the 10% treat rule for daily caloric intake.
I had no idea asparagus roots grew so well 😮. Will asparagus spears grow up from roots that escape the beds?
Asparagus without a hot house starter trench is persona non grata and compes non mentis (crazy idea) in Northwestern New Mexico. California has it down to a science. (My original home State) Have you seen the commercial fields? They look like a Level 5 Supermax Prison yard! Once established , they take over the hot house like an alien invasion! Ask me how I know!
Want to raise asparagus on the cheap? Start asparagus by seed in a patio pot. They make an excellent decorative plants. After one year you can then replant them in their final destination.
Just dig up those plant taking those big clumps over to your fence then just a string will keep them out of your way
Here in zone 9-10, frost isn’t a consideration. Neither is invasion as I planted in 4 large pots.🌴🌵🏜️👩🏼🌾
Funny, my dog eats potatoes… and celery… and carrots.
I tried to move my two-year old asparagus roots this past fall. I had six plants to move. I was only able to dig up four before I gave up. Even after only 2 years in the ground, the roots were MASSIVE–reminded me of the creatures from the Aliens movie. Each plant had at least 100 strong roots on it–it was insane. I would venture to guess that after two years they are imp;ossible to remove.
Asparagus needs to go to seed every 2 years or so. You can't have asparagus shoots unless you let it go to seed. I've never had a problem growing it.
I have planted lots of ways but my most hardy plants have volunteered from seeds. The soil here as far as top soil is very shallow and very low organic matter. Just under the top soil is a shallow layer of rocks on top of red clay. That could be why seeded does better than dug in
I have two large raised beds of asparagus. This year I am anticipating a large harvest. I don’t have adjacent beds.
Oh man good to know I will now be planting it in a stock tank alongside my raspberries, blackberries, mint and other invasive crazy plants.
I have a established 5' round patch, but it keeps showing up elsewhere in the yard.
Usually near the base of the larger shade trees in the yard (mostly the exposed roots of maple)(where the mower can't get).
Recently the grapes were being decimated… The asparagus had started invading the grapes (30 feet away)!
I have even found it in the Rhubarb…
I am considering cutting them back before they go to seed, mostly because it's growing wild in the road ditches nearby.
Thanks for this info. I’m waiting for 2yr old asparagus crowns. Do I plant them differently? 🤔
1:33 you should have been feeding it
Any garden perennials always get planted on the extreme edges of your regular garden……….
Haha. The potato offering was soundly rejected. Dale is such a good boy!!
I remember it being planted along fence lines. Then you also get the volunteers from the birds- they eat it then expel it while sitting on the fences, there was a lot of wild asparagus wherever there were birds.
I had friends in Michigan with a huge 1-acre garden inside an electric fence. The asparagus was planted outside the fence all along one side because no matter how much the deer ate, they came back!
Thanks for this video. I'm in Zone 6a. My plan for next season is to work on my perm crop garden and Asparagus is the crown jewel next to rhubarb and hazelnuts. The spot that I'm planning my Asparagus is not going to be a problem for expansion. let it grow, let it grow, let it grow.
I planted asparagus from seeds, it works.
Dumb question…? If you don't like them in the middle of the garden, why didn't you just move them while they were dormant? ❓
I have goffers and had planned to put wire mesh at the bottom of my raised bed. Will it damage the asparagus roots and their growth if there is wire mesh under the?
Maybe try to transplant large plants and see how they do,,,? Maybe moving it won't be such a loss. Also, why don't you trim the tops off?
I don't think I want to plant asparagrass after hearing about all this😮.
鞥。。。鞥。。鞥。。鞥鞥鞥。。⋯⋯。
Good advice
Is relocating them possible?
I planted raspberries next to my asparagus. I didn't realize my mistake until a couple years later
Farmers & ranchers in my part of IL let them grow in the road ditches since they plow the fields every year.
Will harvest my first crop of asparagus spring of 2026… 3 Year Waite 😊
Is that a potato in your pocket, or are you glad to see me?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
