PHNOM PENH — The French Commune Council of Fere-en-Tardenois has named a garden as Norodom Sihanouk Garden in memory of the king’s visit to the commune.
It is set to officially open on January 8.
The name reflects the historic peace talks held in the area. These played a crucial role in the country’s journey toward peace, according to the Embassy of Cambodia in France.
The talks began in 1987, following visits by King Norodom Sihanouk and former prime minister Hun Sen. The negotiations led to the Paris Peace Agreements in 1991, paving the way for peace, national reconciliation and reconstruction.
The embassy said it was proud to see the memory of the king and the history of peace being so highly valued in France.
At the garden’s inauguration, Norodom Arunrasmey, personal advisor to King Norodom Sihamoni and a member of the Cambodian Senate, will attend the event as the king’s representative.
The Peace Agreement was signed on October 23, 1991, by the four Cambodian factions involved in the conflict. It had witnesses from 18 countries and the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The agreement ended the civil war and led to the establishment of a constitution, a liberal multi-party democratic system, and the protection of sovereignty and independence.
